Broken Spears Essay - Why the Aztecs Could Have Won

Portilla'sCM contribution to historians’ understanding of the Spanish invasion of Mexico challenges typical assumptions made of the resistance byCM Aztec forces and the intangibleCM advantages enjoyed by Spanish troops. The Broken Spears contains evidence of well trained, effective, and dynamic Aztec military forces capable of going toe to toe with Spanish forces. The Broken Spears highlights the important role fear played in paralyzing Aztec leadership, leaving the Aztecs susceptible to attack by Spanish forces.

The notion that Aztecs were defenseless is absurd. To the contrary, The Broken Spears indicates the Aztecs possessed well trained armies. There’s strong evidence to support the idea of a rigorous Aztec combat training program. In fact, Aztec military preparations were so thorough they conscripted young children for combat training (Portilla, XLIII) and even kept the entire Tlaxcala nation in tact to be used as a nonconsensual sparring partner to train inexperienced warriors. (Portilla, XLI) The effectiveness of Aztec military training can be judged by the span of Aztec power. By the time the Spanish had arrived the Aztecs had subjected most of their neighbors including Coyoacan, Cuitlahuac, Xochimilco and Chalco to a tributary relationship. (Portilla, XLCM)

The Broken Spears also highlights the Aztecs’ excellent military command structure that greatly contributed to a disciplined fighting force. Small units of roughly 20 soldiers were grouped into larger units of a few hundred. Each group was commanded by a tiachcauh and these were led by even more powerful military commanders known as tlacatecatl and tlacochcalcatl. (Portilla, XLIII) The Aztecs benefited greatly from this command structure during the Night of Sorrows. Aztec warriors obediently carried out orders given by group leaders such as the call to arms issued by Huitzilopochtli to pursue fleeing Spanish troops and their Tlaxcala allies. There’s also a superb display of Aztec military discipline during Cortes’ recapture of Tenochtitlan. Rather than run in terror and confusion as much of the city had done when cannons were fired, (Portilla, 66) Aztec warriors displayed military discipline and stood their ground against terrifying Spanish cannons and quickly adapted with zig-zagging techniques to reduce casualties. (Portilla, 94)

The Aztecs demonstrated an excellent grasp on military tactics during the defense of Techochtitlan. The Aztecs attempted to ambush and capture or murder key Spanish personnel like Fray Bernardino de Sahagun who could speak Nahuatl, a key Spanish resource enabling negotiations with potential allies. (Portilla, 83) The Aztecs enforced an effective blockade against Spanish troops barricaded inside the Tenochtitlan palace, and forced Spanish troops to temporarily withdraw. (Portilla, 78)

It's difficult to be asked to believe the Aztecs were defenseless against invading Spanish armies after a thorough examination of the Night of Sorrows during which the Spanish and allied Tlaxcala warriors were quickly routed after a surprise attack. In response to the massacre at Toxcatl, the Aztecs placed Cortes under siege, (Portilla, 78) forcing Cortes to retreat from Tenochtitlan. (Portilla, 83) The ensuing battle leads to a slaughter of the Spanish and Tlaxcala forces at the hands of the Aztecs. The Massacre at the Canal of the Toltecs epitomizes the capability of the Aztecs to defeat Spanish forces. The Spanish had been so badly cornered by the Aztecs the Spanish had been forced to leap from the cliff the Aztecs corralled them in. There were so many bodies a literal manmade bridge had been constructed over which remaining Spanish forces continued their retreat. (Portilla, 85)

The traditional account of the Spanish conquest of Mexico would have historians believe gunpowder was the only military advantageCM the Spanish enjoyed over the Aztecs. The Broken Spears proves this thesis to be anything but accurate. One of the most crucial advantages the Spanish had over the Aztecs was fear. Fear turned otherwise strong, capable Aztec leaders into cowering lumps of mush.

Montecuhzoma stands out as a prime example of how fear of the Spaniards paved the way for Spanish victory over Mexico. It’s important to note Montecuhzoma’s reaction to the arrival of unfamiliar Spanish vessels on the Aztec coast. Montecuhzoma felt threatened by the arrival of the Spanish whom Montcuhzoma perceived to be gods. (Portilla, 13) This led to a devastating lack of strong leadership on the part of Montecuhzoma. Time after time his fear of the Spanish enables Cortes to place Montecuhzoma and his people in ever more compromising situations, not the least of which is his decision to welcome the Spanish into Tenochtitlan after hearing of the conversion of Tezcoco to Christianity. (Portilla, 61) By allowing the Spanish into the city Montecuhzoma set the stage for his own capture and death.

As soon as the Spanish had entered the city they placed Montecuhzoma under house arrest and shot a cannon round to throw the inhabitants of Tenochtitlan into confusion. (Portilla, 65-66) Spanish troops secured and looted the city, seizing vast stores of Aztec gold. After a twenty day stay, the Spanish attacked the Aztecs without warning and slaughtered a large group of Aztec warriors unarmed. (Portilla, 74) Had Montecuhzoma acted with fortitude and placed confidence in his military might his army would have never been caught unarmed and mowed down by the Spanish and Tlaxcalas without resistance.

Portilla’s The Broken Spears adds to historians understanding of the fall of Mexico at the hands of the Spanish by providing a contrast to several common storylines. Most notably, he reverses the idea that the Aztecs were powerless against Spanish cannons and arquebuses. He reveals the Aztecs to be a warlike people capable of fending against the Spanish for themselves. This side of the Aztecs is most visible on the Night of Sorrows just after the Spanish massacre of Aztec warriors. The Aztecs successfully force Spanish-Taxcala military forces to retreat from Tenochtitlan with all haste, inflicting heavy casualties on Spanish soldiers and Taxcala warriors. Furthermore, Portilla effectively dispels the myth that guns were the only advantage possessed by the Spanish. The actions of Montecuhzoma present a clear case for fear playing a large role in the fall of the Aztec empire. Rather than standing firm when faced with Spanish aggression, Montecuhzoma acquiesces to Spanish demands which places Montecuhzoma and his people in precarious positions and susceptible to attacks by the Spanish.

From what I've read online there are a lot of these post cards going around with varying catch phrases including "we've been going nuts trying to contact you" with a picture of a couple nuts running around.

If they can get you to call, they try to sell you magazine subscriptions so you can enter a contest of some sort. From what I can tell these people aren't too malicious. But I wouldn't waste my time calling.

Sitemaps for SEO
Webmasters are faced with the challenge of getting pages spidered and ranked. That’s where sitemaps come in. Search Engines like Google use sitemaps to detect new web pages or content on a website. Actively maintaining a sitemap helps tell search engines which pages of your site have changed and where your new content is. Sitemaps are also a good way for new sites to get noticed quickly by major search engines.

Sitemap Programs for the Big Three

Sitemaps for Google
Google just came out with a new beta program called Google Sitemaps that allows webmasters to tell Google where their sitemap is located. Notice there are two columns, the left column points to a sitemap on a specific subject which contains links to all the articles on their site related to that subject. The column on the right lists links to pages on their forums that deal with specific topics such as PageRank and Site Reviews.

Sadly, Reggie has broken his promise. Because I was lulled into a false sense of security over the past 6 months by promises of bountiful Wii stocks I slept in this morning. I was "seduced in to deception [his] last post were lies and not truths. [I am] fooled like a duck. A cupcake is on [my] face." As a result of this deception, I have failed to acquire a Wii pre-order contract with a major video game distribution corporation.

From what I hear there were only about 10 units available per store at launch. So Reggie, you're officially on notice! (Until you provide me with a console for purchase at launch and if you give me one for free you go on the wall on heroes! If you give me a console and 10 controller components, you will be a permanent hero and have your name highlighted in platinum text.

There are hundreds of other science articles I've read since high school and they all used to amaze me. I would sit at my computer and think "wow, I didn't even see that comming." Well science, I've finally reached the point where I'm not surprised about much anymore. With talk about virtual immortality, traveling to mars, and playing god in the scientific community I'm not phased by much. Even if I woke up tommorow and heard we cured cancer I wouldn't be surprised. Here is a list of things that would surprise me:

Okay science, I keep hearing about going to the moon, mars, and checking out planets in our solar system. I'm not going to be surprised when we do it because I know we can. What I'm unsure of is our ability to travel outside of our Solar System. It seems as though we're stuck here in this dump with only ONE planet hospitable to human life. We don't even have a nice view! The ort cloud and Kuiper Belt? Pfff, please. Let me know when I can buy a ticket out of here.

Look guys, it's time we got light sabers. I really don't care how you do it. I don't care if they don't hum and only come in green. I need a light saber. I don't really expect you to get this one down in my lifetime. I know we can theoretically move forward in time (E=MC2), but how do we move back? There's a lot of things I want to see and do, most of which involve changing the future. (I have no issues about changing the future.)

Meaning Behind Heroes Crane

If you haven't noticed symbolism runs rampant through the lives of our heroes. I've read a lot of conversation about Hiro's paper crane and what it means. I'll try to present historical and story context of the events surrounding Hiro's paper crane.

Hiro's grandparents were victims of the devastation of the Hiroshima atomic bombing of WWII. Hiro was named after the city ("Hiro"shima) in hopes they would never forget the devastation and suffering that ensued.

In an attempt to teach him the importance of acting to confront evil and the difference a single person can make in the world, his Grandfather gives him his personal copy of Action Comics #1. (The first comic featuring Superman.) Sadly, Hiro loses track of the lessons personified in the character Superman. Hiro grows up and reflects Clark Kent, a weak, spineless man, incapable of standing up for himself let alone standing up against evil.

After Hiro discovers his super powers he tears up his comic book collection and finds Action Comics #1 at the bottom of his stash, reflective of the place he has put the qualities of Superman in his life. He suddenly has a great appreciation for the things his grandfather was trying to teach him. Realizing he has failed to make a difference in the world he rips the cover off Action Comics #1 and folds it into a paper crane.

Paper Cranes are associated all over the world with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and peace because of Sadako Sasaki. Sadako developed leukemia as a result of the bombing and died very young. When she was close to death she heard legend that said folding a 1000 paper cranes would grant a single wish. She raced to fold 1000 cranes and wished for an end suffering. She died after folding about half. The rest were folded by her classmates who buried all 1000 paper cranes with her.

Today, there is a memorial to Sadako with the words "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world." In the final scene of "The Crane" Hiro is seen kneeling at the bottom of a statue with these very words inscribed and innumerable paper cranes surrounding his.

Heroes Symbolism: Kali

Kali is a Hindu god. Her name is associated with the words black, and time, some people interpret her name as meaning "black time". She is also said to guide faithful devotees through the afterlife and bestow powers on people who repeat her name.

Significance of Kali
The first scene of the "Monsters" comic opens up with Mohinder recounting a story his grandmother told him about the Hindu god Kali. Then Mohinder's father explains that there is no such thing as monsters and that he doesn't believe in the gods. However, he does believe that people are capable of extraordinary things like teleportation.

In the television series, Chandra mirrors Kali when he is credited for helping Sylar "reach his potential" or become aware powers. I would also like to note that Kali's name can mean time, and Hiro Nakamura has the ability to manipulate the time-space continuum and this probably links Hiro, Chandra, and Sylar.

Prize Fighter Inferno: After Jesse dies during within the time frame of From Fear through the Eyes of Madness, Jesse is resurected in the past and takes on the role of chronicler and the name "The Prize Fighter Inferno". He explains that to tell the story of the Bag Online Adventures he must first tell the story of the Blood Machine.

Blood Machine: The Blood machine is invented by the psychopathic Bleam Brothers named Long-Arm and Butchie. They believe the blood machine can release a person’s soul from its body. This is just a figment of their insanity; in reality the blood machine mutilates bodies.

Cecilia McCloud: Cecilia is molested by her father and runs away into the woods. Horrified by her family situation Cecilia decides to run away and tries to convince her boyfriend Johnny Early to run away with her. Unfortunately, Johnny doesn't go with Cecilia and she takes her twin siblings with her.

McCloud Twins: Taken with Cecilia when she runs away into the woods.

Johnny Early: Johnny is Cecilia’s love interest. Cecilia once tried to convince Johnny to run away with her after she is molested.

Bleam Brothers: The Bleam brothers are told by their mother that they have been given the job of “death” and they must harvest souls for god. During their quest to harvest souls they invent something they call “the blood machine”. The Bleam brothers believe it releases the souls. Unfortunately, this is only a figment of their hysteria; in reality the blood machine mutilates the bodies of their victims.

Long-Arm: One of the Bleam brothers.

Mother Bleam: A deranged woman and meth user who believes god speaks to her. Claims god instructed her to tell her sons they “death”. Tells her sons that God told her she to tell her sons that they are "death" and they need to collect souls for god.
Father Bleam: Murders his wife when he catches her stealing from his meth stash. She was murdered by her husband for stealing his meth.

Father Bleam: Patriarch of the family. He killed his wife for stealing from his meth stash.

The Light and the Glass starts out with Claudio talking to Erica Court about a letter she wrote. In the comic Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV there are several scenes depicting a house with an illuminated window. Erica Court is behind the “glass” with her lover giving us the name of the song “The Light and the Glass”.

They start talking about they’re relationship and Claudio brings up the guys she cheated on him with remarking they were “smiles staged in photographs” where she pretended to be happy.

Well, I guess I have a new subject I'll be blogging about. I'm calling it "Why is This News?".

I wake up every weekday morning and watch the news after I shower for work. I don't think there has been in a morning in the past 2 years where I haven't screamed in my mind "Oh my GOD!, I can't believe this is happening." After I've worked myself into a rage over world events I take to the streets and begin my commute to work. I always encounter at least 3 motorists that make me ask myself how they ever survived long enough to get a license, or at least look old to enough to have a license.

Well, I think I know why my life has come to that, its the media. The media hasn't played its role in keeping important things important, its almost as if the media has ADD. They'll give an important story like "Korea Launches Nuclear Capable Missiles" half a day worth of coverage and drop the story once the latest superstar couple pops out a kid.

Well, it’s finally reached the boiling point for me and I've decided I'm going skewer mass media outlets for their failure to educate the public on important issues right here, starting with a roasting of Yahoo! News. (Yes, that is a NoFollow link.)

Notice the three highlighted headlines taken from the Yahoo! homepage. Do you honestly think this is front page news? Some obscure YouTube girl announces that her journal was scripted? I mean, c'mon! Next up, a dog confused by Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". Last, but not least, we have the Gotti's view on mob style manliness.

These are not headlines, they should be silly articles posted on blogs with little or no readership like this one. Lets see what took a back seat to something tantamount to Yahoo! generating revenue by dangling a shiny rock in the eyes of the world to entertain us.

Notice the headline in red. Does anybody else wonder why news about two nuclear armed nations going back to the bargaining table isn't headline, front page news? Maybe I'm crazy.

Dr. Hatcher worked herself into a frenzy as she poured over the bleeping screen in front of her. “It can’t be!” she thought as she tried to find the will power to resist making that long awaited call to her closest friend and colleague Rachel Burgundy. “I have to” she told herself, “this is the real thing, all I’ve ever hoped for, all I ever dreamed of, it can’t be a mistake this time!”

Jade picked up her phone and dialed Rachel, having to restart at least twice after her clumsy, quaking fingers hit the wrong buttons. As soon as her phone rang Rachel jumped up in her bed and wished for a moment she hadn’t volunteered for night shifts at the lab, relegating her to day sleeping. “Hello” she said with as much anger she could muster while maintaining a friendly voice.

“Rachel, we’ve done it! We’ve made contact.

Rachel moaned threatened “This better not be a mistake Jade, or another one of those stupid pranks those grad students talk you into.”

“No! It’s the real thing, I’ve already run several diagnostics, and the lab in Fukushima confirmed my findings. You have to get dressed right away and get down here as soon as you can. There’s no telling what will happen next!”

My Ideas of a First Encounter

I started thinking about aliens tonight; partly because I discovered Star Wars Transformers, but mostly because I always think of aliens. My closest alien encounter was when I walked outside when I was 7 or 8 and saw a bunch of bright blinking lights floating over my house and trees, humming as it floated through the sky. As I watched in horror at the impending alien invasion I found myself paralyzed and unable to move. Then, it shifted course, coming out of the trees and into the clearing. At last, it was in full view, and not an alien at all. It was the Budwiser Blimp.

Well, anyway, I was thinking about aliens tonight. I thought about what they might be like the problems they would have and the way we would meet. The assumptions I make here are based on a semester of basic astronomy and numerous sci-fi movies, mini series, and TV shows.

First Encounter
I think the most likely first encounter will be through some form of communication, possibly via radio waves or by way of yet to be discovered form of interstellar / intergalactic communication. We’ll exchange messages, at first, being cautious not to reveal too much information. (EX: Our exact level of technology, location of our planet, etc. Basically take all the precautions you would when talking to someone online.) Most importantly, exchange information. This could be anything and everything ranging from technology, history, and origins.

If after a number of years of meeting each other we decide they’re safe to meet, and have the technology to travel across vast distances, we’ll start meeting and interacting on a slightly more meaningful level.

This will definitely be continued.

A Favor House Atlantic Story / Interpretation

There are two songs I’ve wanted to write the storyline to, Welcome Home and A Favor House Atlantic. At last, I’ve finally reached A Favor House Atlantic.

A Favor House Atlantic tells the story of the daring rescue attempt alluded to in “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: III.” The man who said “Deliver a Favor to My Love” is about to make good on his promise and rescue Mariah Antillarea. He sneaks into the heavily guarded prison and headquarters of Wilhelm Ryan, House Atlantic; hence the title “A Favor House Atlantic”.

In this song he finds her and they begin to reminisce the time when she was captured and realizes that this experience is traumatic for her and quickly changes the subject to escape. As they make their way for the exit a sniper inflicts a minor wound on one of the would be escapees causing this guy to say “good eye sniper”.

They almost make it to safety when the girl he went to save betrays them. He is caught and very angry. This is chronicled in the song “Welcome Home”. (“You choked off the surest of favors.”

Star Wars Transformers ?

Its not very often I see a toy so appalling I have to blog about it. Unfortunately I happened to see not so often at the mall today, he was wearing a long trench coat and had a moustache.

Mr. Not So Often threw a Star Wars toy my way, but it wasn’t any Star Wars toy, it was a Star Wars Transformer toy!? I know, I know, you probably just spilled your can of jolt on your plastic fold up keyboard. Star Wars Transformers?! That’s like....uh…well something that seemingly doesn’t go together. But for the sake of making you read this I’ll say “or does it”?

To tell you the truth, I don’t really know. Fortunately for me I don’t have to use facts to support all my online articles. So, I’ll just pretend I bought the $35 - $40 toy today at my local Kay-B-Toy Store and say it’s a so-so game and give it low marks for taking the imagination of America away by providing sound effects and high marks for most unlikely series fusion. I give it ¾ of a golden The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Comes in multiple editions of what the heck?

Camper Velourium Story : Coheed and Cambria

The Camper Velourium Series Story

Song: The Camper Velourium I: Faint of Hearts

Told from the perspective of Al the Killer, this song chronicles his abduction of a girl he keeps as his prisoner on a ship called The Camper Velourium. Over the course of the song Al falls in love with this girl. Listen to the end of the song and you’ll catch Claudio Sanchez sing “So I bid to you goodnight, tonight sleep tight my gun” instead of “my love” suggesting that Al the Killer’s heart has grown “faint” and he is unable to shoot her. It is likely that the trauma has made this poor girl’s heart faint and Al’s inability to shoot her has made his heart faint as well, hence the name “Faint of Hearts”.

The Camper Velourium II: Backend of Forever

Still from of perspective of Al, the song opens with Al being awaken suddenly. He is startled to find out that the girl he held as a prisoner has escaped. Al is now very heart broken and ponders why she left him. Unfortunately for Al, he actually believed that his prisoner had fallen in love with him. He realizes the truth of their relationship at the end of the song saying “this isn’t love so forever let it go”.

The Camper Velourium III: Al the Killer

After being devastated by a bad relationship, the space pirate Al the Killer raids a colony. The girl he was in love with happens to be there and so he devotes the entire space colony to destruction, including her. (“When I kill her, I’ll have her”) He is dismayed that nobody attempted to stop him, lamenting the lack of an antagonist. (Will the killing veil love should the heroes play dumb, but killings no fun when the heroes are none”)

Coheed and Cambria Story : The Crowing

The Crowing Story

The Crowing is told from Claudio’s point of view. It tells of his revelation that he is “The Crowing” and the events surrounding it. We find out that he is in live of Newo Ikkin and that Ambellina has been sent to watch over him like a guardian angel.

Blood Red Summer Storyline
This is another song that completely baffles me. The song suggests that Mariah Antillarea is thinking about how her actions will affect Jesse and Claudio. (“Even number your nephew” refers to Jesse and Claudio. “A child in keeping secrets” referring to the Secret of Silent Earth which is Mariah.) There is also a possible reference to the traitorous acts to be committed during the rescue attempt at House Atlantic. (“Will they know what I’ve done in the after?”) The title “Blood Red Summer can also refer to the blood that will be spilled on her account.

No doubt these storyline explanations will evolve as I look ever deeper into the story of Coheed and Cambria.

So, when a search engine sees that a lot of people are linking to you and you aren’t linking back, it assumes you’re popular and useful.

Here is a rough storyline for the first three songs including lyrics:

Disclaimer: This is the storyline in so far as I see it. Some things will be wrong, and some things will be right. I’ll update these explanations as often as I can and as the storyline is revealed.

Song: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth : 3
This song is told from the perspective of one of the characters, I don’t know which one. The story of this song tells of his anticipation of an upcoming battle. Then, Mariah Antillarea is referenced. She is the secret that Silent Earth has been keeping. Mariah is a powerful mage that is supposed to lead an army against Wilhelm Ryan. (There is a picture of Mariah being born the cover of “The Second Stage Turbine Blade.)

The back half of the song reveals his motives for fighting, glory and a girl. It seems he has a crush on Mariah Antillarea. However, he thinks her affections belong to people who get more glory and credit for winning battles like navigators and pilots while he is a lowly jackhammer gunner. (Jackhammers are basically turrets.) This leads to one of my favorite lines in the song: “for you my love I would kill

Song: Cuts Marked in the March of Men

This song is told from the perspective of the narrator from IKSSE3. He describes the outcome of the battle he was so eager to fight. It seems that they are going to lose this battle and prisoners are going to be taken. He is very distraught over the capture of the Mariah Antillarea and wishes to take her place. He observes the destruction that their failure allows to happen, people lying dead in the streets. He then asks “is god’s work to have us fail?” wondering if it was their destiny to lose the war against Wilhelm Ryan.

At the last moment the battle doesn’t seem lost, and he starts to regret some of the horrible things he has to do to win and promises to “make peace” when its all over. The song ends with a promise: “deliver a favor to my love”, meaning he plans on trying to rescue Mariah, this takes place in “A Favor: House Atlantic”. (See the connection now?)

I don’t know very much about this one except that it is about Longcindia. Longcindia was one of Dr. Hohenberger’s failed creations. Longcindia was a malfunctioning IRO-Bot and destined for destruction. Fortunately for Longcindia he was “reborn” and saved. (Longcindia is referenced in the comics when Hohenberger says “I’ll burn you just like I burned Longcindia.)

The New Super Mario Bros. Review and Comments

I'm still trying to figure out why they put "the" in "The New Super Mario Bros." I don't know, it just kinda seems weird to me.

Anyway, if you haven't heard or played about this game here are a few reasons why I like it:

1: Excellent sequel to the greatest side scrolling game of all time.
2: The giant mushroom. This thing is so freakin sweet. I love smashing through everything in site, and the smash meter thingy was a nice touch too.
3: Levels are cool and innovative. The multi directional warp pipes are a nice surprise. I’ll leave all the other cool surprises a secret.

There are a few annoying elements like giant fish and the turtle power up, but overall this game is excellent. I’m even tempted to beat it a second time, a feat few games have inspired me to achieve. If you like Mario at all, this is definitely a must play game.

Something You Should Know: Holding down L and R at the “Select a File” screen and pressing A will let you play as Luigi. A neat little thing many Mario games have neglected.

Kingdom Hearts II Review

I’m a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts. The first one was really awesome and the second one was even better. First, I like the Gummi Ship levels better. They’re really neat and get to be really challenging. Sephiroth was also a nice addition, though beating him was no small task. (I leveled up to 70 before I could beat him.) Unfortunately Sephiroth was the only hard part about the game. Though I had a lot more fun playing it, the game was a lot easier.

Favorite Things to Do:
Level and power up Goofy as much as I can.
Fly Gummi Ship missions.
Spend time in Atlantis jamming with Sebastian.

The Tao of Pooh Book Review

Okay, I know you haven't seen it in the MyMediaList thingamaboby but I finished the book today and here is my review:

It seems a man deeply interested in philosophy came to see Winnie the Pooh Bear as the epitome of Taoism. (Pronounced Dao and Daoism. I learned this the hard way.) So, he set off to prove it. He wrote a book on the basic principals of Taoism and illustrated these principals with examples from the stories of Winnie the Pooh. He also contrasts the other characters like Rabbit with Pooh and highlights how Pooh benefits from unwittingly practicing the ancient Chinese philosophy.

My favorite part of the book is the chapter about being clever and having knowledge for the sake of knowledge. He skewers Rabbit for being a know it all and Owl for, well, I’ll let you read it to find out. Things start going downhill after that, and I kept reading mostly for the sake of reading the excerpts from Winnie the Pooh because I always thought I should have read at least two or three Winnie the Pooh stories in my life and this may be the closest I ever come.

Goals

I have several goals for I want to reach by 2007, they are:

1: Be able to quit my job.
I want to build up a blogging empire, as evidenced by the ads and Amazon AStore. The goal is to consistently generate $1600 a month consistently so I can quit my job and concentrate on my real passions: blogging, video games, and history.

2: Get straight A's
Because I have this terrible addiction to food, water, shelter, clothing and the ocassional geeky toy like light sabers and DS games I need to work. This means I can only take 6 to 9 units of school a semester depending on my workload. So, since I'm going to be taking so few classes I hope to get straight A's this semester. I still don't know what classes I'm taking...I'll know by Wednesday.

3: Sell something through an affiliate program.
My friend started a Treadmill review blog and he started making some money from it. I got jealous, wrathful, and envious. Thats why I decided to start blogging about stuff I care about. His blog is here.

4: Finish reading 2 books I started in June and July.
I started reading the Tao of Pooh. It explains the concepts of Taoism with story excerpts from Winnie the Pooh. Pooh is supposedly the empitome of Taoism.

The War. Its a book about World War II written way before I was born. Its a very good chronology of the events that led to that god awful war. I'll write reviews of both when I finish.

5: Remember to set the font of all my posts to Arial.

6: Reach all of my goals and make it look easy.
Even though I know it won't be easy, I want to make it look like it is. I don't know why.

I'm a lightsaber duel veteran. I've dueled with fate and the darkside on beaches, at campsites, in living rooms, and all manor of backdrops where a blade can be swung. At last! I've also dueled with a wide range of lightsabers, from home made to the hard plastic short ones sold for 6.99 at Kay-B-Toys. However, there is one that stands out. They say not for dueling, but I've wailed with these bad boys for hours on end and they've yet to show any sign of wear! If you buy one lightsaber in your life, buy this one!

I've been trying to figure out where I stand on the global warming issue, and thank thanks to a little trip up north (Around Santa Barbara.) I have finally come to a couple conclusions.

1:The Earth is warming and the ice caps are melting.

2:It doesn't matter if man or nature is to blame. If its man, even the U.S. can't stop it because the U.S. isn't the only country spewing out toxic waste into the atmosphere. If it is nature, she only listens to herself and will continue her course regardless of men's plans.

you may have seen this horribly inaccurate piece of "coolist" propaganda.

let's dissect this argument.

K is for Kool Kids

Why does this line rock? Because they spell Cool Kids on their album cover with a K.

this is exactly the type of cool-wing hate speech being taught to our children by these so-called "kids"! they're not even cool, they're liars. let's look at their album title.

however, a quick head on over to their itunes page reveals this:

what's the big deal, you ask? well, i'll point it out for you.

that's right, folks. these so-called "punks" are in actuality an R&B/SOUL GROUP. further listens reveal techno-inspired dance beats.

these people are liars. do we really need more liars?

also, i quote a music fan from "California" from their amazon page...

This is the most pointless music I have ever heard. (...) share it with friends and laugh it up, but don't expect anything that is actually good to be on it. It is the Plan 9 From Outer Space of music.

yes, this review WAS helpful to me.

let's move on to my next point.

i again quote this post.

dictionary.com defines a "cannibal" as "An animal that feeds on others of its own kind."

this part is vital:

Z DOES NOT EQUAL E.

the obvious and correct conclusion is thus reached: z is not a cannibal, and cannibalism is not being taught. if anything, correct spelling is being taught. those cooler kids can't even spell their own name!!

ultimately the choice is up to you guys. but very ultimately the choice is up to me,

United States Progressive Era Essay

The Progressives can best be described as a large mixture of various demographics. This group included women, bussinessmen, middle class and most anyone else wanting to end the corruption and injustice of a politcal system that was mostly good, but had lost its way.

To understand why they sought change, it is pertenent to know what it was that drove them. Many progressives observed the assasination of three presidents, the politcal machines that dominated politics, and the corruption that infested city, state, and national politics. They were also strongly influenced by books and media that sought to expose the dark under belly of society, such as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle that explored the horrible conditions of the meat packing industry.

Moved to action by past events and a growing progressive media, the Progressives sought reform of a government they saw as good. A cruicial accomplishment of the progressives is the establishment of specialized comissions to accomplish specific tasks. This need was highlighted by the city of Galveston's overt deficiency in administering aid to its disaster hit population.

Another reform that lasted to this day is Women's suffrage. This movement was headed by Susan B. Anthony and was organized by a femenist movement which is still very active in American politics today.

Progressives were also able to successfully abolish gross abuses of child labor as well as adult labor by establishing age and hour requirements as well as successfuly regulating working conidtions that were once deplorable.

The Progressives, as I have said had far reaching impact on American socierty, from the unification of various social groups to the establishment of new loval government order and increased government in the social lives of Americans. This movement laid the foundation of modern day liberalism.
